Sports Day in Canada is a new national event that celebrates sport at all levels across Canada. Using the model that CBC created for Hockey Day in Canada and building off the momentum of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Sports Day in Canada is an opportunity to showcase all manner of sports, while mobilizing the nation in the power of being active. Sports Day in Canada will be the culmination of a week (September 11-18, 2010) of sporting events and festivals, celebrating grassroots sport stories, engaging citizens in physical activity and rallying local organizations to provide participatory opportunities in communities across Canada.

Who is putting on Sports Day in Canada?

This new initiative is being managed by the Sports Day in Canada Steering Committee composed of the Canadian Soccer Association, Canadian Olympic Committee, Canadian Paralympic Committee, Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, Coaching Association of Canada, ParticipACTION and the True Sport Foundation, which house the Committee. Together, we are spearheading the development of a flexible, multi-level and open platform to celebrate values-based sport in Canada. Our vision is to reach out to all Canadians to build, solidify and celbrate the role of sport in our country through a dynamic, energetic, and influential movement that inspires Canadians to get active and participate in Sport.

Sporty Life recently conducted a survey with its participants to better understand why they registered in the Sporty Kids program, as well as provide them a chance to leave comments and suggestions based on their experiences.

The results of the survey will help us refine our programs to better meet the needs and requirements of our participants.

Below are some of the comments we received from the survey.

“I just want to thank you for providing this program for our children in their school. It’s so convenient and fun for them.”

“We think this is a great program for our daughter. Just what she needs to introduce her to fun sports. Thanks for the great program.”

“My understanding of Sporty Life is that it is a very positive and inclusive environment. This is important to me. My child is not sports-inclined and does not see herself as having much athletic ability. I value that Sporty Life strives to teach her sports skills in a healthy, supportive way. She has already reported back that Sporty Kids is “fun” and she wants to attend the next session. It’s also a convenient time- wonderful!!”

“My son is LOVING Sporty Kids and just this morning showed me how he could touch his nose to his knee and keep his balance!!”

We would like to thank everyone who participated in the survey. Your time and comments are greatly appreciated.

The book examines the connections between even moderate exercise, the reduction of stress levels, improved memory, and even enhance academic performance in children.

The following article was published in the Globe and Mail in November and tells the story of a teacher in Saskatchewan who read the book and decided to introduce treadmills into her Grade 10 classroom in an attempt to improve academic scores, and it worked.

The kids in her program, Movement Matters, dramatically outscored those in classes it wasn’t offered on standardized test.
